UFC 84: I'll Will

UFC Fight Results and Recap
UFC Betting Review:

UFC 84 - Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro NakamuraThe bad blood was real in this mixed martial arts fight main event between BJ Penn and Sean Sherk as this mixed martial arts main event did not disappoint. In fact UFC 84: I’ll Will was one of the best MMA cards in a long time, as every fight was exciting. As usually our UFC handicapping team was perfect in predicting all of the UFC fights as we went 11 for 11 in our UFC betting predictions.

BJ Penn now becomes the undisputed UFC lightweight champion as for 3 rounds he dominated Sean Sherk in the stand up. His pin point accuracy with his jabs took a toll on Sherk as Penn used his quick jab and uppercuts to cut Sherk on both eyes as his punches were quick and on the mark. Penn’s stand up was quicker and way more accurate as Sherk was unable to do anything in the fight as he was constantly peppered with shots to his face.

The first two rounds Penn used his jabs and upper cuts to snap back Sherk’s head and Sherk was unable to land his hooks. At the start of the third round Sherk’s face was bloody and he was unable to shoot in or use his wrestling skills. By the end of the third round Penn landed a punch combination that send Sherk reeling to the back of the cage. From there Penn landed a running left knee to the head of Sherk which send Sherk hard to the canvass. Penn than proceeded to land multiple shots to Sherk’s head before the ref stopped the fight just as the bell rang.

As we stated in our MMA match up report “This fight will be decided by the stand up and Penn will pepper Sherk” and this fight was what we predicted. Penn totally dismantled Sherk and will now wait for the winner of the Kenny Florian versus Roger Huerta fight. After UFC 84 Penn looks unstoppable in the 155 weight division but after his fight he stated he wants a rematch with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

Also as we predicted in our match up report between Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine, the Axe Murdered would get back on track and stop the Dean of Mean. As we stated, “Look for Silva to KO Jardine in fast in the first round with a fast aggressive striking attack”. Wanderlei Silva stormed in and rocked Jardine and he fell hard to the canvass. Silva proceeded to land vicious shots to Jardine but holding his throat in the Rape Choke and was able to land heavy heavy shots to Jardine’s head. The Dean of Mean was out cold and his legs were shaking from the vicious attack.

Tito Ortiz’s last fight in the UFC was a great battle with undefeated fighter Lyoto Machida. Machida’s unorthodox stand up style confused Ortiz for the first two rounds as Machida used his awkward fighting style to land shots to Ortiz from odd angles. After the second round Ortiz was down on the judges score cards and was visibly frustrated in Machida’s fighting style. At the beginning of the third round Ortiz comes close to scoring a single-leg, but Machida's takedown defense stops his shoot attempts. The fighter’s trade punches from the clinch with Ortiz getting the best of the exchange. Machida lands a solid knee to the liver that collapses Ortiz to the canvas. Machida pounces but he can't put Ortiz away. Ortiz rallies and nearly puts Machida way with a triangle-armbar transition. Machida survives until the end of the round for a three round unanimous decision. Ortiz goes out of the UFC as a great fighter and his last fight was his best in years as his surprised everyone with a great submission attempt.

Our sports betting underdog pick of the night was for Goran Reljic to defeat ATT fighter Wilson Gouveia and he did not disappoint with a second round TKO. Gouveia had Reljic rocked in the first round but he could not finish the Croatian fighter. As we stated in our online betting report Gouveia was never known for his conditioning and by the second round he started to let his hands drop. Because his hands were not as high as they should have been he got knocked down by a left to the temple. Gouveia covers up and is beat on until referee Herb Dean stops the fight at 3:15 of the second.

All in all this was one of the most exciting UFC fight cards in a long time as we said goodbye to Oritz to the octagon, settled a feud to determine a UFC lightweight champion, saw a MMA legend return to glory and saw some great fighters who made inroads to title contention like Sokoudjou’s victory over Nakamura and Thiago Silva’s dominate performance over a very game Antonio Mendes. Also we saw a great Anaconda choke by UFC newcomer Yoshiyuki Yoshida over UFC TUF show contestant Jon Koppenhaver.

The next UFC is UFC 85 Bedlam has the main event between Matt Hughes fighting Thiago Alves on June 7, 2008 at The O2 arena in London, England. If Alves wins he will be hte number one contender for hte UFC welterweight title and get his title shot after the Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch fight. The original main event was suppose to be Chuck Liddell and Mauricio Rua; however, Shogun required surgery on an injured knee so Rashad Sugar Evans replaced Rua in the main event with the Iceman, then Liddell was forced to withdraw from the bout with Rashad due to a hamstring injury.
