UFC Middleweight fight: Patrick Côté vs. Ricardo Almeida
Why is Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida (9-2) an underdog in this fight? He is one of the best grapplers in the middleweight division and Patrick “The Predator” Côté (12-4) has been off and on. At times he looks great and at times he does not fight so well.
For some reason the online sports betting sites like strikers over grapplers but most fights end up on the ground. I will take Almeida over Côté any day of the week no matter the odds because Almeida is so much better on the ground with grappling than Côté is. He is a third degree black belt in BJJ under Renzo Gracie and has much more experience fighting mixed martial arts with much tougher opponents.
If you look at Côté’s fighting record he has not fought high quality opponents in the past as his most recent fight have been against middle of the road fighters like Andrew McFedries at UFC Fight Night 12, Kendall Grove at UFC 74 - Respect, Jason Day, Scott Smith at UFC 67 - All or Nothing, Jason MacDonald, Bill Mahood and a lose to Chris Leben at UFC Ultimate Fight Night. Côté’s fights against theses fighters are no where near the quality Ricardo Almeida is as a fighter.
Almeida on the other hand has fought a lot of tough quality opponents with wins over Ryo Chonan at PRIDE - Bushido 3, Nathan Marquardt, Kazuo Misaki, Ikuhisa Minowa, and Akira Shoji. He also has a DQ loss to Matt Lindland. Almeida retired for a 3-year period because he was not making enough fighting mixed martial arts. After a six fight win streak to focus on running his Jiu-Jitsu school in Hamilton, New Jersey he is now back fighting MMA. Since the explosion of MMA he has returned and signed a six fight contract with the UFC.
Despite his absence from mixed martial arts Almeida is a very good fighter and if you look at Côté’s loses he has lost most of his fights due to submission. He lost to Travis Lutter at the Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale via arm bar and he lost to Joe Doerksen by submission rear naked choke at UFC 52 - Couture vs. Liddell 2. Almeida is a much better grappler than Doerksen and Lutter as he should easily manhandle Côté with a dominating ground game.
Bottom Line: Patrick Côté has dominate striking abilities but once this fight goes to the clinch and to the ground Patrick Côté will have no answer for Big Dog’s ground game. He is not only a BJJ black belt but a 3ed degree black belt. Côté is a purple belt as best.
Betting wise this is a strong play to make for the underdog. UFC betting lines probably reflect the large betting odds due to the fact that Côté is a better known name and he is a striker. Côté has been on the TUF reality series and has had more UFC fights which means he has more exposure publicity wise. Online odds makers like strikers and are not as aware of the fighter’s background. This fight will begin with Côté establishing outside striking but once he moves in Almeida will clinch and take him down. Côté does not have the sprawl technique and wrestling skills to avoid a take down from Almeida. Once this fight goes to the ground Almeida will use dominate BJJ to maneuver to take his back and submit Côté.
Take Almeida for a second submission victory
