Herschel Walker: Man or Mockery

George SabgaMost die hard MMA fans view the addition of a former sports star to the cage as a circus side show done just for publicity, making a mockery of our beloved MMA.  The thought of it usually conjures the image of a terrified Jose Canseco sprinting away from Hong Man Choi just after Canseco took, what appeared to be his first punch in the face ever.

Why do these athletes subject themselves to potential humiliation?  Is it for the payday?  Another crack at the spotlight? Is the same arrogance that made Michael Jordon think that he could play baseball making Herschel Walker step into the cage?

Typically, I would be the first to agree that a former football player has about as much right to be in the cage as Chuck Liddell has to be on the Yankees; but Herschel Walker is not your typical football player.  What separates this 47 year old from the dozens of others that have tried to bridge the gap before him is that his motives are pure.  He is not looking for a paycheck.  He is donating every penny of his purse to charity.  He is not looking for the spotlight.  This soft spoken super star shies away from attention due to his multiple personality disorder.  Just one conversation with Herschel shows that he is the salt of the earth and is fighting for the most compelling reason of all. He fights for the love of competition.Herschel Walker

In a recent interview, Herschel admitted that he so desired the rush of competition that, after he retired from football, he would play Russian roulette with his six shooter just to get that thrill again.  On Saturday Jan 30th, in the Bank Atlantic Center, Herschel will get a chance at the adrenaline rush he so craves as he takes on a man who is 20 years his junior in Greg Nagy.

This is an opportunity of a lifetime for the 28 year old Nagy. He gets a chance to show his chops on a national stage as he takes on a man who is a 3.5 to 1 favorite despite having never had a professional MMA fight.

Nagy was chosen as an opponent for the former Heisman Trophy winner because they are of similar size and, to quote his trainer, Roland Sarria "You can't put [Walker] in with Fedor [Emelianenko], right?
Greg is 1-1, he's a good-looking kid. I'd say he's a bit more advanced than Herschel, but not by much. I thought it was a good match up"

Even though the major influencing factor in getting Nagy the fight is that he is 'no Fedor', Nagy has a lot at risk.  This fight can either propel this MMA newcomer into the spotlight or snub out his career before it has even started.  An entire budding career will be made or broken within the confines of three 5 minute rounds. Any way you slice it, Nagy will be fighting for his future and livelihood and that makes him more dangerous than the 3.5 to 1 odds may indicate.

On Saturday Jan 30th, at Strikeforce: Miami, Herschel Walker points the barrel of his six shooter at his temple once again.  This time, however, it is loaded with a hungry MMA newcomer with his future on the line.

Regardless if there is one in the chamber or not, the fans can undoubtedly expect to see some fireworks.
